TEACHERS are to rally outside a language school after a former colleague allegedly faced maternity discrimination, the TEFL Workers Union has announced.
The union for teachers of English as a foreign language, part of the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW), will hold the protest outside Escape Campus in Bloomsbury, central London, on Saturday.
It is demanding compensation for a former teacher, identified only as Sheela, for unpaid wages and a commitment to honouring wages and hours owed to other Escape Campus staff.
The union said that after returning from maternity leave, she had her hours cut to below what was stated in her contract, her payslips were regularly late and they did not include the hours she spent doing administrative work.
Lead organiser Tom Liebewitz said: “Our previous actions brought Escape bosses to the negotiating table, but the company still refuses to take the steps Sheela demands to make this right.”
Escape Campus was contacted for comment.
