MEN’S CYCLING:
Irish national road race champion Rory Townsend won his first World Tour race after holding off some of the world’s best one-day riders to claim Sunday’s Hamburg classic.
Townsend was part of the breakaway that led for almost 200km before launching a sprint that gave him victory over second-placed Arnauld de Lie with Paul Magnier third, Jesper Philipsen fourth, Biniam Grimay in eighth and Wout van Aert tenth.
WOMEN’S RUGBY LEAGUE:
The quality gap between the Super League’s top and bottom four was once again emphasised by the weekend’s one-sided results.
Grace Banks scored four tries as table-toppers Wigan thumped Leigh 72-0, Lucy Murray and Ebony Stead both bagged hat-tricks in Leeds’s 78-0 thrashing of Barrow, reigning champions York Valkyrie crushed bottom club Warrington 86-0 and St Helens enjoyed a comfortable 48-0 win over Huddersfield.
WOMEN’S FOOTBALL:
Rosie Livingstone and Kathleen McGovern both scored twice as Hibs began their Scottish Premier League title defence with Sunday’s 5-1 win over Aberdeen.
Last season’s runners-up Glasgow City beat Motherwell 3-0, Rangers eased to a 6-1 victory at Montrose, Celtic saw off Hearts 2-1 and Erin Rennie scored with the last kick of the game as Partick Thistle edged to a 2-1 win at newly promoted Hamilton.
MEN’S GOLF:
World number one Scottie Scheffler came from four shots down to win the Western Open in Maryland on Sunday night.
Scheffler finished two shots clear of Scotland’s Robert MacIntyre, who had led after three rounds, with American Maverick McNealy two shots further back in third.
Southport-born Tommy Fleetwood ended joint fourth with the US’s Sam Burns. Rory McIlroy was twelfth, 12 shots behind Scheffler.
