MEXICO: Protesters – made up of court workers, students and the public – blocked entrances to Congress in Mexico City on Tuesday in anger at a reform that would make judges stand for election, rather than qualify for their positions.

Many employees, including those at the Supreme Court, have gone on strike in protest at the proposal by President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador’s Morena party that they say would politicise and de-professionalise the court system.

 

MIGRATION: A boat carrying 32 people capsized off the Libyan coast today, leaving one person dead and 22 others missing, as they attempted to make their way to Europe.

Nine people were rescued and taken to a port in Tobruk, according to the coast guard, marking the latest in a series of deadly incidents facing migrants fleeing war and poverty.

 

CLIMATE CHANGE: African nations are losing 5 per cent of their GDP each year as they bear the heaviest burden from warming temperatures, a new report found after the continent recorded one of its hottest years on record.

The World Meteorological Organisation said Africa is the most vulnerable region to extreme weather events, including draughts, floods and heatwaves, despite being responsible for less than 10 per cent of the global greenhouse gas emissions.

 

ASIA: Heavy monsoon rains and floods have killed at least 33 people in northern India and five children in Pakistan over the past two days, as houses collapsed and were swept away, while floods took over roads and railways.

In the Philippines, at least 14 people died in landslides, floods and swollen rivers, with its storm in the north making its way northward over the sea towards China.
