LEFT Labour MP Richard Burgon announced today he is joining the emergency aid flotilla to break the US siege on Cuba to provide critical medical equipment to the island.
The Leeds East representative has joined activists, elected officials and trade unionists from around the world on their mission to bring life-saving supplies to the Cuban people.
“Donald Trump must not be allowed to make millions of ordinary Cubans suffer,” Mr Burgon said.
“That’s why we’re going on this emergency delegation for the practical purpose of delivering medical aid.
“But it’s also for the political purpose of speaking with one voice to say: ‘Donald Trump’s aggression against the people of Cuba must end.’”
The Nuestra America Flotilla will leave on Saturday, sailing across the Caribbean with humanitarian aid and volunteers in an act of international solidarity against the US sanctions which have recently brought large parts of the Cuban state to its knees.
Tightened US sanctions have disrupted fuel imports, grounded flights, and forced emergency conservation measures nationwide — straining hospitals, transport and everyday life.
Speaking in the British office of the Cuba Solidarity Campaign, Mr Burgon said: “I’m going on an emergency delegation to Cuba, joining members of parliaments from around the world and joining the Nuestra America convoy.
“We’re going to deliver medical aid because Donald Trump has been trying to strangle the people of Cuba into submission.
“He’s stopped fuel going into Cuba for months, and that’s having a devastating effect on millions of people there.
“This is necessary because Donald Trump is trying to intensify the ongoing blockade of Cuba, a blockade that’s illegal, immoral and unjust and makes ordinary Cubans suffer.
“The majority of governments and people of the world have spoken out and opposed the blockade of Cuba year after year but Donald Trump has now intensified it in an unprecedented way.”
He added: “Donald Trump must not be allowed to make millions of ordinary Cubans suffer. It’s wrong, it’s illegal, it’s immoral, and we need to speak out.”
Cuba Solidarity Campaign director Rob Miller told the Morning Star: “Trump’s aggression against the island is causing widespread humanitarian suffering to the Cuban people and all efforts to extend the hand of friendship and solidarity are to be welcomed at this time.
“The Nuestra America flotilla alongside the Cuba Vive appeal are providing real concrete solidarity and material aid at this time.
“The support from British parliamentarians and the wider trade union and labour movement is a testament to the deep bonds of friendship between our peoples.”
Other high-profile names joining the aid effort include the Irish trio Kneecap and left-wing US political Twitch streamer Hasan Piker.
This week, the US president made clear he was interested in military action against Cuba, saying he would have “the honour of taking Cuba.”
He later added that he “can do anything [he wants]” with the country.
