FRANCE: A suspected cyberattack knocked the national postal service and its banking arm offline today, blocking and delaying package deliveries and online payments at the height of the busy Christmas season.
The postal service, called La Poste, said in a statement that a distributed denial of service incident (DDoS) “rendered its online services inaccessible.” It said the incident had no impact on customer data, but disrupted package and mail delivery.
“Our teams are mobilised to resolve the situation quickly,” the bank said.
US: CBS News didn’t air a planned story on Sunday covering the Trump administration’s deportations to El Salvador, pulling it hours before airtime at the direction of new editor-in-chief Bari Weiss, a Trump loyalist.
The story, where correspondent Sharyn Alfonsi spoke to deportees who had been sent to El Salvador’s notorious mega prison, was held because Ms Weiss apparently sought to add “perspective” from the Trump administration, according to people at the network.
Ms Alfonsi said the decision not to air the show was “a political one.”
TRADE: China will impose up to 42.7 per cent of provisional tariffs on dairy products including milk and cheese imported from the European Union, its Commerce Ministry said today.
The elevated duties, which take effect on Tuesday, were based on preliminary results from an investigation opened by China’s Commerce Ministry in August 2024 as tensions between Beijing and Brussels flared.
Beijing’s probe was launched as part of tit-for-tat measures as the EU investigated Chinese subsidies on electric vehicles, and later imposed tariffs as high as 45.3 per cent on China-made EVs.
INDONESIA: A passenger bus crash killed at least 16 people on the island of Java just after midnight on Monday, officials said.
The bus carrying 34 people lost control on a toll road and struck a concrete barrier before rolling onto its side, a search-and-rescue agency chief.
The inter-province bus was travelling from the capital Jakarta to the country’s ancient royal city of Yogyakarta when it overturned while entering a curved exit ramp at the Krapyak toll way in Central Java’s Semarang city.
