New South Wales drafts tighter gun laws after Bondi Beach attack
A tribute for Bondi Beach mass shooting victim, 10-year-old Matilda, whose last name is being withheld at the request of her family, at the Bondi Pavilion in Sydney, December 18, 2025

THE GOVERNMENT of New South Wales introduced draft laws to the Australian parliament today that could become the toughest in the country, following the December 14 terrorist attack on Sydney’s Bondi Beach.

If passed, the new restrictions will only issue firearms licences to Australian citizens and limit recreational shooters to a maximum of four guns.

Such laws would have excluded one of the shooters, Sajid Akram — who was an Indian citizen with settled status — from being able to buy the weapons, the state government said.

He was killed on scene during the anti-semitic attack at the start of the eight-day Hanukkah celebration.

His son and alleged accomplice, Naveed Akram, was transferred from a hospital to a prison today.

The authorities have charged him with 59 offences, including 15 counts of murder, 40 counts of causing harm with intent to murder in relation to the wounded survivors and one count of committing a terrorist act.
