INDIA: Hundreds of rescue workers searched through mud and debris today from multiple landslides that have killed at least 151 people in southern India, police said.

The landslides occurred after torrential rains triggered torrents of mud and water that swept through tea estates and villages.

Another 186 people were injured by the landslides that hit hilly areas in Kerala state’s Wayanad district early Tuesday, flattening houses, uprooting trees and destroying bridges, said police officer Aijaz, who uses one name.

CHINA: Beijing sanctioned a United States lawmaker today for “frequently interfering” in China’s domestic affairs.

The sanctions against Representative Jim McGovern include freezing his assets and properties in China, prohibiting any organisation or individual in China from conducting transactions or working with him, and denying him and his family a visa to enter the country, according to a statement from China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

MYANMAR: The military regime that seized power in Myanmar three years ago today extended the state of emergency in the civil war-wracked country for another six months, saying it needs time to prepare for long-promised elections.

The emergency decree empowers the military to assume all government functions, giving the head of the ruling military council, Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, legislative, judicial and executive powers.

SUDAN: Khartoum’s military said today that its top commander, General Abdel-Fattah Burhan, was unhurt after a drone attack on a military graduation ceremony that killed five people in the country’s east.

The military said in a statement that the attack by two drones took place in Gebeit, a town in eastern Sudan, after the ceremony was concluded.
