YOUR Party aims to replace Labour and eventually run the government as the new political party of the left, co-founder Zarah Sultana MP said today.
The Coventry South MP told BBC’s Political Thinking with Nick Robinson that she wanted to “change people’s lives for the better,” which requires “winning state power.”
Asked if she aimed with her new party to replace Labour, she said: “That’s the vision. We are the party of the left, and we have to build.
“And we’re starting from very humble beginnings. But this isn’t a three, four-year project. This is a 10-20, 30-40-year project.
“I’m in politics because of a desire to change people’s lives for the better and that means winning state power.
“That means actually running government. That means nationalising. That means building council homes, that means providing people with the good, secure jobs that they deserve.”
Ms Sultana, who quit Labour in July to form the new group with former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn, added that her new party will work with a resurgent Green Party in order to “stop Reform” which has opened up a 10-point lead in national polls.
Asked whether she would join the Greens, Ms Sultana said she liked new leader Zack Polanski “but we are a different party…there will be those alliances and those electoral pacts in the future.”
Addressing concerns Your Party could split the left vote, she said that Labour “probably should have worried about that before it enabled genocide and passed through austerity.
“The Labour Party actually was quite content because it thought the left had nowhere else to go — and now the left has choices.”
Her interview came after three officials quit the board of MoU Operations Ltd — set up to oversee Your Party’s finances and membership — handing over to her as the sole director.
The party’s initial launch saw hundreds of thousands sign up expressing interest but has been beset by rows over leadership, finances and its name. Two membership system launches have between them seen only a small fraction of that number become paid-up members.
Members will vote on the official name at a founding conference in Liverpool next month.
Ms Sultana said that she hopes to co-lead the new party with Mr Corbyn, but will “throw her hat in the ring” if members opt for a single leader when the party constitution is agreed at conference.
