SOUTH AFRICA: Nine people were killed and at least 10 hurt after gunmen opened fire in a pub near Johannesburg in the early hours this morning.
The attack was carried out by about a dozen unidentified assailants arriving in a minibus and a car. The motive is unknown, and they appeared to open fire indiscriminately at pub-goers.
ITALY: Tourists visiting Rome’s Trevi fountain will have to pay €2 (£1.75) to get near it from February.
The fee is designed to manage numbers at the popular attraction and will only apply in daylight hours. Tourist taxes are an increasingly common means for cities to boost revenues, and Rome residents will be exempt.
FRANCE: An Elysee palace official will go on trial next year for selling off the presidential silver.
The silver steward employed at the French president’s official residence has been arrested alongside an online dealer in tableware and a man suspected of receiving between €15-40,000 (£13-35,000) worth of stolen silverware.
DR CONGO: The UN security council has called on Rwanda to withdraw from eastern Congo and extended its own peacekeeping mission there for a year.
The M23 rebel group is backed by Rwanda. It seized another city, Uvira, last week despite a peace agreement signed by DR Congo and Rwanda earlier this month mediated by the United States.
