WET WARFARE: Pakistan’s deputy prime minister accused neighbouring India today of “weaponising water” by releasing water from Indian dams without warning, saying the move violates a World Bank-brokered water-sharing treaty and threatens peace and stability in the region.

Ishaq Dar made the remarks a day after Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry said it had written to New Delhi seeking clarification over what it described as irregular water releases from the Chenab River.

IMPEACHMENT: Taiwan’s opposition Kuomintang and People’s Party held a joint press conference this afternoon announcing the process of impeachment had begun against “autocratic” leader Lai Ching-te.

Mr Lai, of the separatist Democratic Progressive Party, was elected last year with a minority of votes. He has been criticised for executive overreach, his handling of Japan-China tensions and a controversial planned $40 billion (£30bn) weapons deal with the United States.

BOLIVIA: The streets of Bolivia’s largest cities, La Paz and Santa Cruz, were brought to a standstill today as public transportation workers went on strike against a 100 per cent fuel price increase ordered by the country’s new government.

Food and transportation prices soared and the workers have demanded that officials revoke the fuel increase.

SOUTH SUDAN: United Nations staff member Bol Roch Mayol, a South Sudanese national, was found dead in South Sudan days after being taken into custody by security personnel, the world body said in a statement today.

Army Lieutenant Lino Mariak Chol and two other soldiers were arrested after admitting to the killing and disclosing the whereabouts of the body, said Saninto Udol, a police spokesman.
