Three cheers for communism at Marx Oration at Highgate Cemetery
The 2025 Marx Oration

CROWDS at Karl Marx’s Highgate Cemetery tomb gave three cheers for communism today following the 2025 Marx Oration.

The event, which traces its history back to Friedrich Engels’s address by the graveside of his friend, takes place each year on the Sunday closest to the anniversary of Marx’s death on March 14.

Cuban ambassador Ismara Vargas Walter told those gathered that “Marxism is not a dogma, it is a tool for critical thinking … and for liberation.

“How do we reconcile globalised technology with socialist values? How do we combat climate change within a US-dominated capitalist world order? The answers lie in Marx’s emphasis on collective action and scientific planning.”

All-India Farmers Union president Dr Ashok Dhawale denounced a world in which “since 2020, the richest 1 per cent have grabbed nearly 67 per cent of all new wealth … [and] billionaire fortunes rise by $2.7 billion a day [while] 46 per cent of the world’s population live under the global poverty line.”

After the speeches representatives of the Communist Party, Marx Memorial Library, Morning Star, Young Communist League and several foreign embassies and communist parties laid wreaths.
