MEN’S FOOTBALL:

Shamrock Rovers top the League of Ireland by 10 points with a game in hand after winning 2-1 at lowly Waterford on Monday evening.

Defending champions Shelbourne are 17 points off the pace in sixth following their 2-1 defeat at Drogheda,, while Mason Melia scored twice as St Patrick’s stuffed bottom of the table Cork 4-0 and Sligo swapped places with Galway in the relegation zone after edging them 1-0.

SPEEDWAY:

Max Fricke top-scored with 12+1 points as Leicester Lions beat Sheffield 47-43 in Monday night’s second leg of their play-off semi-final to earn a narrow 90-89 aggregate success.

The Lions, who were runners-up last year, will next meet regular season champions Ipswich in the two-legged Premiership Grand Final.

Neither team has won the title since the competition was relaunched in 2017.

MEN’S CRICKET:

The final round of County Championship division one matches begin tomorrow with table-toppers Nottingham, who enjoy a 14 point lead over defending champions Surrey, taking on fourth-placed Warwickshire.

Surrey are at relegation-threatened Hampshire while Essex meet Somerset, already relegated Worcester host Sussex and Durham are up against Yorkshire with both teams still needing points to avoid the drop.

MEN’S RUGBY UNION:

The new English Premiership season gets under way at the Salford Community Stadium tomorrow evening when Sale face Gloucester.

Sale finished third last season, two points ahead of fifth-placed Gloucester.

Reigning champions Bath begin their campaign with a visit to Harlequins on Friday evening when last year’s bottom club Newcastle, who have made 14 new signings, take on Saracens at Kingston Park.
