A SECOND Unite official has been sacked after workers began organising for better conditions at a luxury Manchester city centre hotel, the union said today.
Unite alleged that both members of staff had been targeted for undertaking trade union activities at the InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG)-owned Kimpton Clocktower hotel.
The latest worker was suspended for more than 35 days before being dismissed.
Unite general secretary Sharon Graham said: “IHG could work with Unite to come up with meaningful solutions to problems raised by its workers, but instead it is choosing to prioritise going after our reps and firing them.
“This situation is an utter disgrace and a clear case of union victimisation. Management must reconsider this aggressive approach and reinstate these sacked reps.”
Attempts by workers at the hotel and its restaurant, the Refuge, to move towards formal union recognition have been refused by IHG, said Unite.
IHG was contacted for comment.
