Ministers vow to vote down Lords amendments to Employment Rights Bill
Members of the House of Lords gather in the chamber ahead of the King's Speech during the State Opening of Parliament in the House of Lords at the Palace of Westminster in London, July 17, 2024

THE government vowed to overturn weakening Lords amendments to the Employment Rights Bill as Labour’s flagship policy returned to the Commons today.

The Department for Business and Trade said the bids to water down the day-one protection from unfair dismissal and limit those able to benefit from the planned ban on exploitative zero-hours contracts would be voted down.

Unions made a plea for the Bill to be implemented in full after Angela Rayner and Justin Madders, both of whom were heavily involved in promoting it, left their posts as deputy prime minister and employment minister, sparking fears about its future.

Today, PM Sir Keir Starmer said the Bill would “make a real difference to people’s lives," while Business Secretary Peter Kyle said businesses had been consulted “every step of the way."

Sir Keir Starmer reassured Labour MPs last week that the Bill would continue to progress with the same substance as before.
