CLEANERS in Glasgow have called on council bosses for a much-improved pay offer to avoid industrial action during Cop26.
The GMB members voted overwhelmingly for strike action unless a pay dispute with Scotland’s local authority body, Cosla, is resolved.
Almost 97 per cent of workers said they supported taking the action during next month’s UN climate summit in Glasgow, with world leaders set to descend on the city.
An offer of an £850 pay rise for local government staff earning up to £25,000 a year was roundly rejected by GMB members last month.
In a video message on social media, branch convener Chris Mitchell said workers were sending a clear message to the government and Cosla over this issue.
He said: “We were called Covid heroes and critical workers. This is where low-paid workers take a stand against Cosla and say enough is enough because these heroes here deserve a decent pay rise.”
A Cosla spokesman said the work of local government workers was and continues to be greatly appreciated with ongoing constructive negotiations under way.
