SCOTLAND’S flagship “super-hospital” has caused further problems for ministers in Holyrood as opposition MSPs demanded answers from Nicola Sturgeon over failings at the Glasgow site.
During First Minister’s Questions at Holyrood today, the SNP leader was asked whether she will take responsibility for the growing scandal over infections at the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital.
At the request of the Crown Office, Scottish Labour leader Anas Sarwar this week passed on details to the Procurator Fiscal of the death of a second child at the hospital.
A case note review published earlier this year confirmed there were two children’s deaths linked to hospital infections, one being Milly Main, which is already the subject of a criminal investigation.
But the other case was not previously reported for investigation.
A public inquiry into both the Queen Elizabeth and the Royal Hospital for Children and Young People in Edinburgh began in August.
Mr Sarwar said: “Every bit of progress has been fought for by the families and campaigners.
“Nicola Sturgeon was health secretary when the hospital was commissioned, and she was first minister when it opened.
“We can’t wait for the outcome of the public inquiry for families to get justice — that could take years.
“Nicola Sturgeon must take responsibility, own this crisis, get a grip of this rotten health board, and get the families the truth and justice they deserve.”
Ms Sturgeon said that her government had set up the inquiry and it would not be appropriate to intervene in an independent process.
The First Minister said she has the greatest sympathy for families and whistleblowers, but that it is for the police and Crown Office to decide which cases to investigate.
