LABOUR leader Jeremy Corbyn will open an exhibition about Tamil history on Sunday.
Tamils of Lanka: A Timeless Heritage is the brainchild of the late Vairamuttu Varadakumar, a long-term friend of Mr Corbyn’s who died in March aged 69.
The director of the Tamil Information Centre (TIC) organised Mr Corbyn’s landmark visit to Sri Lanka in 1984 at the start of the country’s civil war, sparking the Labour MP’s interest in the Tamil liberation struggle.
Upon learning of his death, Mr Corbyn said in a statement: “The Tamils have lost a Trojan … and the world is a poorer place for his passing.”
This weekend’s exhibition marks 10 years since Sri Lanka’s war ended, with the total annihilation of Tamil rebels amid massive government shelling of civilian safe zones.
Mr Corbyn will tour the temporary museum with shadow chancellor John McDonnell in a move that will reaffirm the pair’s legendary support for oppressed communities.
The two-day exhibition is run by TIC and will be open to the public at Tolworth Recreation Centre in Surbiton from 11am to 9pm this Saturday and Sunday.
