Gavin Williamson gets live interview terminated after snaking around question
Defence secretary Gavin Williamson

DEFENCE secretary Gavin Williamson had a live TV interview “terminated” today for repeatedly failing to answer a question about whether he regretted telling Russia to “shut up and go away.”

Richard Madeley, who was standing in for Piers Morgan on Good Morning Britain, asked Mr Williamson to answer for his “Trump-esque language” in the wake of the Skripals being poisoned with Novichok in Salisbury.

Mr Williamson was on the morning show to discuss the deployment of British troops to Malawi to train soldiers in anti-poaching techniques, before discussions turned to Russia.

Mr Madeley asked: “You told Russia to shut up and go away. Do you regret that? Do you think that was a bit too informal?”

Mr Williamson replied: “What I’d like to pay tribute to initially is the health service personnel …”

He was cut off by Mr Madeley, who said: “Sorry, can you answer the question? No, no no, Mr Williamson. I asked you a straight question.”

Mr Madeley repeated the question, prompting the Tory to evade it again, before it was repeated one more time, four times in total.

He eventually said the interview was being “terminated.”

After the feed was cut, an incredulous Mr Madeley said: “What are they like? What are these politicians like?”
