DOZENS of campaigners have taken to Glasgow’s streets to fight cuts to “lifeline” women’s service Murray’s Initiative.
For more than six decades the organisation has provided help for those affected by alcohol, drugs or trauma, but now its women’s service, which supports those who have suffered violence or abuse, could be set to close due to a £60,000 funding shortage.
A rally organised by Sisters Against Cuts at Glasgow’s Buchanan Steps today heard from those who had benefited from the service, with Glasgow TUC’s Yana Petticrew and Your Party councillor Seonad Hoy also speaking in solidarity.
Co-organiser of the demonstration, Maryam, who did not give her surname, told comrades: “These aren’t about tough choices, this is a political attack on working-class women.
“They tell us there is no money for our services that keep us safe and alive.
“It’s a class war dressed up as budget cuts; its an attack on women’s rights to live free from violence and recover with dignity.
“Our lives and our recovery matters more than balancing budgets on the back of abused women.”
