NIGERIA: A raid on an army base in the north-east killed a general and several soldiers, the government reported on Thursday.
President Bola Tinubu paid tribute to “our gallant soldiers, led by Brigadier General Oseni Omoh Braimah, who made the ultimate sacrifice in defence of our country today in Borno state.”
The attackers are believed to have been jihadist militants.
HUNGARY: Voters head to the polls on Sunday in an election which could end the 16-year reign of far-right Prime Minister Viktor Orban.
The nationalist leader, who first entered politics as an anti-communist agitator during the collapse of the eastern bloc, is at a double-digit deficit in most polls.
The favourite is a former ally, Peter Magyar, who resigned from Mr Orban’s party in 2024.
UKRAINE: Russia has declared a 32-hour ceasefire over the weekend, when Orthodox Christians celebrate Easter.
Russian forces have been told to cease attacks from 4pm on Saturday until the end of Sunday.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who had previously called for such a truce, said he was ready for “reciprocal steps.”
UNITED STATES: The Trump administration will loosen rules on dumping coal ash in groundwater and reduce clean-up obligations on coal-fired power plants, the Environment Protection Agency (EPA) says.
EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin said the move would help shore up “American energy dominance.”
