Madrid had also lost 2-1 in Osasuna in their last league fixture but are nine points clear of third-placed City neighbours Atletico. New manager Alvaro Arbeloa has lost four of his first 12 games.
ICE HOCKEY: Guildford Flames forward Tyler Busch has been suspended for three games after the Canadian illegally came onto the ice to join in a fight during their 3-2 win at Coventry on Saturday night. Nottingham Panthers forward Brendan Harris will also miss three games after he was fined and banned for throwing his broken stick towards a match official during their 4-2 Challenge Cup defeat in Sheffield.
MEN’S CRICKET: South Africa face New Zealand at Kolkata’s Eden Gardens tomorrow afternoon in the Twenty20 World Cup’s first semi-final. The South Africans are the only team left in the tournament with a hundred per cent record from their seven matches. They cruised to a seven wicket victory over the Kiwis with 17 balls to spare when chasing 176 in their group game. England play India in the second semi-final at Mumbai tomorrow.
MEN’S BASKETBALL: This morning’s NBA action saw Alperen Sengun top score with 32 points and 13 rebounds as high-flying Houston held on to beat lowly Washington 123-118. Boston strengthened their second place in the Eastern Conference with a 108-81 win at Milwaukee, Utah lost their sixth match in a row after narrowly going down 125-128 at home to Denver and the LA Clippers won 114-101 at Golden State.
