MAJOR concessions to plans to put up to 41 per cent of Cardiff University staff at risk of redundancy were welcomed by the University and College Union (UCU) today.

Campus unions UCU, Unite and Unison registered a formal dispute over managers’ failure to agree to their demands in June.

On Thursday, Cardiff UCU members welcomed concessions following six months of negotiations, including a guarantee of no compulsory redundancies for academic staff in 2026.

The remaining 187 academics at risk of redundancy were also removed from scope and bosses committed to no compulsory redundancies as part of the current restructuring of professional services staff.

They also made a further commitment to offer suitable alternative employment at the same grade should staff roles be deleted, said UCU.

A Cardiff UCU spokesperson said: “Management still has a lot of work to do if it is to avoid a looming cuts-related workload and mental health crisis.”
