Robison demands 'urgent clarity' on budget
Finance Secretary Shona Robison, February 4, 2025

SNP finance secretary Shona Robison has called for “urgent clarity” from the UK government on whether Scotland will enjoy the same devolved cash boost it has planned for Wales.

This week, a three-year £547 million local growth fund was announced for Wales, with ministers in Cardiff empowered to decide how to spend it, but no similar announcement has yet been made for any other devolved administration.

As Ms Robison prepared to meet chief secretary to the treasury James Murray alongside finance ministers from the other devolved administrations on Friday, she said next month’s budget was an opportunity for Labour “to deliver real support for public services, infrastructure and the cost of living.”

She argued: “The UK economy is struggling and the cost-of-living crisis is causing real harm for people in Scotland.

“This is caused by high inflation, the damaging economic impacts of Brexit, and uncertainty as a result of decisions taken by UK government, so it is vital we see a change in approach.

“The UK government must accept that the Westminster economic consensus has failed and that there is a need for real investment.”

Calling for “urgent clarity on whether local growth funding announced for Wales this week — to be delivered directly by the Welsh government — will be replicated in Scotland,” she added: “Scotland has been short-changed in the past, and we must not be left as an afterthought in the UK government’s Budget.”

Refusing to be drawn, a UK government spokesperson said the meeting would be “an opportunity to work collaboratively with Scottish government colleagues,” adding: “The Chief Secretary to the Treasury is looking forward to hearing devolved governments’ priorities for the forthcoming UK autumn Budget.”
