Peace campaigners march to the Welsh Labour conference demanding action on the genocide in Gaza

A THOUSAND peace campaigners marched to the Welsh Labour conference on Saturday demanding the party act now on the genocide in Gaza.

Stop the War Cymru’s David McKnight said Welsh Labour should stand up as it did against apartheid in South Africa or be remembered as being complicit in genocide.

“Writer James Baldwin said: I cannot believe what you say because I see what you do,” Mr McKnight said.

In a powerful speech, Mr McKnight stressed that boycotts work and demanded a full arms embargo, sanctions on Israel, the expulsion of the Israeli ambassador, the suspension of diplomatic relations and a sports and cultural boycott.

Wrexham peace campaigner Kayleigh Unitt said: “We know about colonisation in Wales, and it is our duty to stand against the colonisation and apartheid in Gaza. If the Palestinian people can continue to fight and survive, then we must support them and continue our fight for them.”

Socialist Campaign Group MP Steve Witherden said: “On June 2, I led a debate in Parliament on ending arms exports to Israel.

“All of us attending the Welsh Labour conference will sympathise with the plight of the Palestinian people and the suffering of Gazans. But that is not enough: we need action.

“We must shout louder and demand better from our government or we will not be judged kindly by history.”

CND Cymru’s Dylan Lewis-Rowland, quoting Harold Wilson, said: “The Labour Party is a moral crusade or it is nothing — and at the moment the party is choosing nothing.”
