Scrap crown tax breaks, say Scottish Greens

THE Scottish Greens have called for the monarchy’s “absurd and undeserved” 100 per cent tax break on buying property to be scrapped as part of the new Housing (Scotland) Bill.

Land and buildings transaction tax is levied at rates of between 5 and 12 per cent on anyone purchasing properties worth over £145,000 — unless they are Charles Windsor, who pays nothing.

The exemption is just one of a range of such privileges, also covering capital gains and inheritance taxes, among others, that the multibillionaire receives through the accident of birth.

Scottish Green MSP Ross Greer, who moved the amendment, said that his party “would obviously scrap the monarchy in a heartbeat, but even royalists must agree that this is an absurd and undeserved perk for someone more than capable of paying his fair share towards our public services.

“The crown is an expensive relic and an insult to democracy. One family should not be allowed to exempt itself from whichever laws it doesn’t want to follow.

“It’s long past time that we challenged, rather than pandered to, elites who want one rule for themselves and another for the rest of us.”
