Our economic system is broken – and unless we break with the government’s obsession with short-termist private profit, things are destined to get worse, warns Mercedes Villalba

AS THE NHS trade unions analyse our ballot results, it’s important to draw lessons for the future because attacks on the health service are not going away. Staff will continue to be affected by the ruthless drive to defund the NHS, carve it up and farm it out the highest bidder.
The NHS is still a long way from being the poorest persons’ dumping ground that uninsured people get in the United States, but be in no doubt that the Tories will use this pandemic to drive their cuts and privatisation agenda and attacks on pay, terms and conditions will be ramped up further.
There is still much to defend and protect before we end up completely losing the free healthcare that previous generations fought hard for.
