MEN’S FOOTBALL:
Goals from Kylian Mbappe, Rodrygo and Vinicius Junior steered European champions Real Madrid to a 3-0 win over Mexico’s Pachuca FC in the inaugural Intercontinental Cup final.
While Madrid were making their first appearance in the competition, the Mexicans were playing their third game in seven days after beating Brazil’s Botafogo and then Egypt’s Al-Ahly after extra time and penalties to reach the final.
MEN’S ICE HOCKEY:
Fife Flyers forward Ryan Foss was fined and suspended for one game after forcefully driving his stick into an opponent’s thigh (spearing) during their 7-1 home defeat to Coventry.
Fife are rock bottom of the Elite League, seven points below Dundee, but they do have two games in hand.
Belfast beat Coventry 4-1 on Wednesday evening to claim their sixth straight win and move second in the table, four points behind Cardiff.
MEN’S CYCLING:
Belgian rider Rik van Looy, who won consecutive world road race titles in the early 1960s and was the first rider to claim all five monument races, died on Wednesday, aged 90.
In a 17-year-long career, he also gained seven Tour de France stage victories, 12 at the Giro D’Italia and 18 in Spain’s La Vuelta.
His total of 367 wins on the road is second only to compatriot Eddy Merckx.
MEN’S BASKETBALL:
Valencia made it eleven Group B wins on the trot after they eased past Romania’s Cluj-Napoca 108-80 to maintain the EuroCup’s only 100 per cent record.
Istanbul’s Bahcesehir College saw off Gran Canaria 73-65 on Wednesday night in Group A’s top of the table clash while at the other end of the table, Poland’s Trefl Sopot remain without a win following their narrow 92-89 defeat at Joventut Badalona.
