
YEMEN: The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) said today that an aid worker had died in a Yemeni prison three weeks after his detention.
The announcement came a day after the UN suspended its operations in the rebels’ stronghold in northern Yemen.
The aid worker was one of seven WFP staffers detained by the Houthi led Yemeni government on January 23. No cause of death was given.
EUROPEAN UNION: European Union chief Ursula von der Leyen vowed today that US tariffs on steel and aluminium “will not go unanswered,” adding that they will trigger tough countermeasures from the 27-nation bloc.
“The EU will act to safeguard its economic interests,” Ms von der Leyen said in a statement in reaction to US President Donald Trump’s imposition of tariffs on steel and aluminium the previous day.
AFGHANISTAN: A suicide bomber blew himself up near a bank in northern Afghanistan today, killing at least five people and wounding seven others, police said.
The attack happened near a branch of the Kabul Bank in Kunduz province, said Jumauddin Khaksar, a police spokesman.
No-one has claimed responsibility for the attack.
UNITED STATES: The Donald Trump-controlled US Justice Department told federal prosecutors today to drop the investigation into corruption by New York City Mayor Eric Adams.
Mr Adams, a Democrat, is accused of accepting illegal campaign funds and gifts in exchange for his influence as mayor. He denies all the allegations.
Prosecutors have not yet indicated whether they intend to drop the case as requested.
