First Minister tackled on child poverty in Wales
First Minister of Wales Eluned Morgan at Cathays Park in Cardiff, August 19, 2024

SENEDD members quizzed First Minister Eluned Morgan today about rising levels of child poverty in Wales.

Liberal Democrat leader Jane Dodds said she has “no idea” what the Welsh government’s aspiration is for cutting the number of children who are living in poverty.

She said: “If I go to Scotland, I know that they want to reduce child poverty by 10 per cent.

“In New Zealand, they want to reduce it by 5 per cent, but in Wales I have no idea what the government’s vision is to reduce child poverty.”

Ms Morgan said her government was investing over £100 million a year in affordable childcare for three and four-year-olds, as well as £46 million in additional funding for childcare under the Flying Start scheme and free meals in primary schools.

Ms Dodds and Labour member Alun Davies wanted the FM to tell Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer to scrap the two-child benefit cap.
