THAILAND: Security forces clashed with protesters from Cambodia today in a disputed border area, threatening a fragile truce reached in July after five days of armed combat.
Official Cambodian statements said 28 people had been injured over the course of several hours near Ban Nong Ya Kaeo in Thailand’s Sa Kaeo province.
No deaths were reported. Thai security forces used non-lethal weapons while Cambodian protesters, who appeared to be civilians, threw stones and other objects.
UNITED STATES: Ben & Jerry’s co-founder Jerry Greenfield quit the ice cream company today after 47 years, saying that the independence it once had to speak up on social issues has been stifled by parent company Unilever.
“For more than 20 years … Ben & Jerry’s stood up and spoke out in support of peace, justice and human rights,” Mr Greenfield said in an open letter to co-founder Ben Cohen.
“It’s profoundly disappointing to come to the conclusion that that independence, the very basis of our sale to Unilever, is gone.”
EUROPEAN UNION: The EU laid out its toughest plan yet to press Israel to end its genocidal war in Gaza today as Palestinians fled en masse from Israeli tanks, drones and troops.
EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas urged the 27 member nations to increase tariffs on some Israeli goods and impose sanctions on Israeli settlers and two members of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s cabinet: National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir and Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, along with 10 Hamas leaders.
GERMANY: Iran has yet to take the actions needed to stop the reimposition of United Nations sanctions over its nuclear programme, European officials said today.
The comments from the German Foreign Ministry and the EU came after a call between Iran and representatives of France, Germany and Britain, plus EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas.
“The window for finding a diplomatic solution on Iran’s nuclear issue is closing really fast,” Ms Kallas said.
Iran must demonstrate “full co-operation with the International Atomic Energy Agency and allowing inspections of all nuclear sites without delay.”
