Veurink to be replaced by Dutch duo after Euro 2025

ENGLAND boss Sarina Wiegman’s assistant Arjan Veurink will be replaced by Janneke Bijl and Arvid Smit after this summer’s Euros.

It was announced last month that Veurink, Wiegman’s number two as the Lionesses won the Euros in 2022 and were World Cup runners-up a year later, would be leaving the role following July’s tournament in Switzerland to become Netherlands head coach.

Bijl and Smit have been part of the Netherlands coaching staff since 2023 and 2019 respectively.

Wiegman said in a statement from the FA: “I am delighted to add Janneke and Arvid to our coaching staff. They both have significant coaching experience at national-team level which will be vital to our mission of qualifying for the 2027 World Cup in Brazil.

“The bar is being raised with every tournament, and we need the very best approach if we are going to continue challenging the top teams.

“As well as the quality they will bring to our training sessions and match planning, I have real trust in how they work and how they can complement the rest of the technical team and our environment.

“I know they are excited by the challenge ahead and I am sure the players will also enjoy working with them.”

Darren Ward is to continue as goalkeeping coach, while Geraint Twose will take up a new position after the Euros as England women lead transition coach, supporting the development and progression of players between the pathway and seniors.

Also, with Kay Cossington soon to depart the FA, Gavin Step is to become interim women’s technical director. He has been working as head of women’s youth development, and Under-23s boss Emma Coates will take interim leadership in that area.
