Striking Sellafield workers being left to urinate in public, GMB says
Sellafield Nuclear Plant in Seascale, Cumbria, November 16, 2010

SOME 200 striking workers at the Sellafield nuclear facility are being left to urinate in public after the company refused to provide facilities for them, GMB said today.

The union said that Sellafield has refused to provide access toilet access to those on the picket line and not given GMB a location to install a Portaloo, despite the nearest public toilet being several miles away.

GMB regional organiser Dan Gow said: “Sellafield’s toilet plan for these striking workers appears to be ‘we won’t provide any — just find a bush.'

“Nothing says 'modern workplace standards’ like leaving women, disabled workers and anyone with medical needs to crouch behind a hedge.

“Bosses may well not be happy with this strike, but dignity is not a luxury — safe, accessible toilets are a basic right.”

The outsourced GMB members have rejected a 3.5 per cent pay offer from Mitie.

Mitie and Sellafield have been contacted for comment.
