ENERGY giant SSE was accused of continuing to “profiteer from the pockets of everyday people” yesterday as it reported billions in profit while the cost-of-living crisis continues.

The company reported an operating profit of almost £2.5 billion over the last year, £1.84bn after tax, up on last year’s £1.83bn post-tax figure.

Announcing the eye-watering figures, SSE chief executive Alastair Phillips-Davies boasted they had met their “financial goals.”

But renewing her union’s calls for the energy profits to be capped as industry and households continue to struggle, Unite general secretary Sharon Graham said: “SSE’s annual results show that energy companies continue to profiteer from the pockets of everyday people. 

“The cost-of-living crisis isn’t over,yet SSE is making billions and lining the pockets of their overseas shareholders.

“To make matters worse, SSE is putting jobs at risk in distribution and renewables — the very people who helped build the company. 

“Unite will be fighting for every one of our members’ jobs against this corporate greed and constant hunt for yet more profit at the expense of workers.”
