A general view before the main fight between Savannah Marshall and Claressa Shields at The O2, London, October 15, 2022

BOXING: Two-time Olympic gold medallist Claressa Shields retained her undisputed heavyweight title with a unanimous points win over Lani Daniels on Saturday night in Detroit.

Shields has been world champion at five different weights, holding all four belts in three of those divisions.

In Bournemouth, Ryan Garner stopped British champion Reese Bellotti in the final round to defend his European super featherweight title.

MEN’S RUGBY LEAGUE: Canberra top the Australian NRL by two points after they stuffed Newcastle Knights 44-18 on Sunday morning and second-placed Canterbury Bankstown crushed Manly Warringah 42-4.

Cronulla edged to a 14-12 win at bottom club South Sydney, four-time defending champions Penrith thumped West 32-2, Gold Coast won 24-16 at New Zealand, North Queensland held off St George Illawarra 38-32 and Parramatta squeezed past Brisbane 22-20.

WOMEN’S FOOTBALL: Jennifer Echegini netted in the 88th minute as defending champions Nigeria came from two down with less than half an hour left to beat hosts Morocco 3-2 in Saturday night’s Africa Cup of Nations final.

The Super Falcons have now won the title on ten of the thirteen times it has been held, and never finished outside the top four.

They are ranked as the world’s 36th best team, 24 places above Morocco.

MEN’S RUGBY: Ray French, who played international rugby at both codes, has died aged 85.

He began his rugby union career at his hometown St Helens club, winning four caps for England before switching to rugby league.

He played in the Saints team that won the 1966 Challenge Cup final and earned four caps for Great Britain after moving to Widnes. French received an MBE for services to rugby league in 2011.
