WOMEN’S SPEEDWAY: 17-year-old Hannah Grunwald won the Speedway Gold Trophy at the world’s biggest ever all-female event in Croatia on Saturday.

She finished ahead of last year’s winner Celina Liebman with Jenny Apfelbeck in third as German riders dominated the podium. Denmark’s Louise Funch Larsen was fourth.

WHEELCHAIR RUGBY LEAGUE: Unbeaten Halifax top the Super League after cruising to 79-4 success at bottom club Edinburgh, while defending champions Leeds eased to 58-16 victory over Wigan that moved them into second place, one point behind but with a game in hand.

Sheffield were edged out 36-32 on their visit to Hull FC and remain without a win from their first three games.

The London Roosters were not in action.

MEN’S RUGBY UNION: Ospreys fly-half Dan Edwards bagged 16 points as Wales ended their 18-match losing run with a 31-22 win over Japan in Kobe on Saturday.

An inexperienced Ireland team ran in 16 tries as they steamrollered Portugal 106-7 in Lisbon to notch up their biggest ever international victory, while Jack van Poortvliet’s last-minute try sealed England’s 22-17 in Argentina and Scotland went down 29-14 to Fiji in Suva.

WOMEN’S BOXING: Lewisham-born Ellie Scotney added the WBC super-bantamweight belt to her WBO and IBF titles after outpointing Mexico’s Yamileth Mercado on the undercard of Katie Taylor’s win over Amanda Serrano at Madison Square Garden.

Hartlepool’s Savannah Marshall lost her IBF super-middleweight belt on points to WBO champion Shadasia Green while Chantelle Cameron, the only women to beat Katie Taylor, outpointed Jessica Camara in a non-title bout.
