ICE HOCKEY: Nottingham Panthers cruised to a 4-1 win at Glasgow in Wednesday night’s Challenge Cup elimination game to set up a semi-final with top seeds Sheffield Steelers.

The other last-four tie sees defending champions Belfast Giants up against Coventry. Both matches are scheduled to take place in February.

Nottingham hold the record of 10 cup final wins but Belfast have picked up the trophy in five of the last seven seasons.


MEN’S BASKETBALL: Shavar Reynolds junior top-scored with 20 points as London Lions needed extra time to edge out high-flying Besitkas Istanbul 98-96 in EuroCup group B on Wednesday evening.

Bourg-en-Bresse earned a narrow 80-76 at third-placed Turk Telecom Ankara to move back to the top of the table, Dolomiti Trento squeezed past Podgorica 91-90 after extra time and bottom club Athens lost again, slumping 69-94 at home to Ulm.


MEN’S CRICKET: India will take a 2-1 lead into the final leg of the their five match Twenty20 series against South Africa in Ahmedabad on Friday.

Wednesday’s scheduled fourth leg was cancelled without even the toss taking place due to what was officially described as “excessive fog” in the north eastern city of Lucknow.

India are currently ranked as the world’s best short format team, four places above the South Africans.


MEN’S FOOTBALL: Paris St Germain won their sixth major trophy of the calendar year after beating Brazil’s Flamengo on penalties, following a 1-1 draw, in the Intercontinental Cup final in Qatar on Wednesday night.

Paris’ Russian goalkeeper Matvey Safonov saved four penalties in the shoot-out. The competition includes all six intercontinental tournament winners with Europe’s Champions League winners getting a bye to the final.
