Slegers heaps praise on ‘pioneers’ FC Twente ahead of Arsenal match
Arsenal manager Renee Slegers celebrates the win with the players after the UEFA Women's Champions League match at Meadow Park, Borehamwood, November 19, 2025

ARSENAL head coach Renee Slegers praised tonight’s Champions League opponents FC Twente for their “pioneering” work in women’s football.

Slegers played for the Eredivisie side between 2007 and 2011, which coincided with the first four years of the league in the Netherlands.

However, there will be no room for sentiment when the teams meet at Meadow Park, with the European champions in desperate need of a win after losing two of their four matches so far.

“I know them from the perspective of I was there at the start of the Eredivisie,” said Slegers. “I was a player back then and Twente was one of the teams that pioneered and was one of the first teams to start the league.

“They’ve done so much for the league in the Netherlands and I’m really impressed that they’re still doing that and still pushing. They’ve meant a lot in the history of women’s football in the Netherlands and they keep on going.”

Elsewhere tomorrow, bottom side Paris Saint Germain will be looking to get their first points of the campaign when they host Leuven.

Wolfsburg will aim to take a giant step towards the quarter-finals as they travel to Real Madrid knowing a win will put them on the brink of direct passage, by-passing February’s play-off round.

Juventus need a win at Austrian side Polten if their hopes of a top-four finish are not to fizzle out.
