A single hostage remains in Gaza after identification of Thai worker's remains
Islamic Jihad and Hamas militants search for the remains of deceased hostages in Beit Lahiya, northern Gaza Strip, December 3, 2025

THE CORPSE of a hostage kidnapped from Israel by militants in October 2023 is all that remains in Gaza after the body of another hostage was identified today.

Israeli and Thai officials identified the deceased as Sudthisak Rinthalak, a Thai agricultural worker whose remains were handed over on Wednesday, had been employed at Kibbutz Be’eri in southern Israel.

The 42-year-old was killed when the militants stormed into Kibbutz Be’eri, one of the hardest-hit communities in the attack, and his body taken by the Islamic Jihad group, according to the Israeli military.

In the attack, militants killed around 1,139 people and took more than 250 others hostage. Israel then launched a genocidal invasion of the Gaza Strip, killing at least 70,125 Palestinians and wounding 171,015.

Thai Foreign Ministry spokesperson Nikorndej Balankura said Mr Sudthisak’s family has been notified and thanked the Israeli government for assistance that led to the release of all 31 Thai hostages.

Of those, 28 were returned alive and three dead. In addition to the hostages, 46 Thais have been killed in the war, according to the ministry.

The confirmation brought the first phase of the eight-week-old so-called “ceasefire” (Israel has killed at least 366 Palestinians since) a step closer to completion.

Israeli Ran Gvili is now the last hostage whose remains have yet to be returned. Mr Gvili was an Israeli police officer who was killed at Kibbutz Alumim in October 2023.

Since the “ceasefire” began, 20 living hostages and the remains of 27 others have been returned to Israel. In exchange, Israel has released the bodies of hundreds of Palestinians to Gaza. Most remain unidentified.

Meanwhile, a former Israeli Defence Force (IDF) general who leaked surveillance footage to the media in August 2024 of IDF soldiers sexually assaulting Palestinian detainees at Sde Teiman detention camp has been discharged from hospital.

Yifat Tomer Yerushalmi resigned after admitting she had leaked a video in October. She was arrested and then placed under house arrest last month.

Days later, she was taken into a Tel Aviv hospital after overdosing on sleeping pills, according to Israeli media.

The Times of Israel newspaper reported today that she is to due be summoned for interrogation in the coming days.
