KHADIJA SHAW scored four times for Manchester City as the Women’s Super League leaders thrashed Aston Villa 6-1 at the Academy Stadium today.
Jamaica forward Shaw’s first of the afternoon was her 100th goal for the club and she became Manchester City’s first female player to reach that milestone in their professional era.
Shaw added another before the break and Aoba Fujino made it three just after the hour before Lucy Parker pulled one back for Villa.
Vivianne Miedema tapped in a fourth before Shaw completed her treble on the counter-attack with six minutes left and deflected in a close-range effort in stoppage time as City headed into the winter break six points clear of Chelsea at the top of the WSL.
After a low-key opening as the rain lashed down, City swept into the lead in the 37th minute when Shaw slid in to knock home a low cross from the left by Lauren Hemp.
Villa looked for a response before the break, with Kirsty Hanson’s floated effort from the edge of the box lacking the power to test City goalkeeper Ayaka Yamashita.
City, though, doubled their lead in stoppage time at the end of the first half.
Yui Hasegawa fed Shaw on the left side of a crowded penalty area, and the Jamaica forward cut back inside before dispatching a low shot into the far corner past Sabrina D’Angelo.
City made a fast start to the second half, with Hemp’s rising drive pushed away by D’Angelo at full stretch before Shaw’s curling shot hit the far post and Miedema was then flagged offside as she fired in the rebound.
It was 3-0 in the 61st minute when Miedema sent Fujino away down the right and her angled shot deflected off Villa full-back Parker and in at the near post.
Parker pulled a goal back with 20 minutes left when she powered in a header at the back post from a corner.
City scored a fourth in the 73rd minute, Miedema tapping in from Fujino’s low cross.
Shaw completed her hat-trick in the 84th minute after being played in down the left channel following a swift counter by substitute Kerolin and then, in stoppage time, touched home Grace Clinton’s low shot from almost on the line.
