Scottish Greens move to close royal tax loophole
A general view of the Scottish Parliament in Holyrood

THE Scottish Greens will force a Holyrood vote to end Charles Windsor’s total exemption from Land Buildings Transaction tax (LBTT), the party said today.

Mr Windsor, who recently inherited the role of head of state, along with billions in cash, jewels and numerous palaces, also inherited a complete exemption from capital gains tax, inheritance tax and corporation tax.

While those taxes are the preserve of the Westminster government, the Greens will move an amendment to the Housing (Scotland) Bill next week to close a loophole allowing him to escape LBTT, a devolved tax levied on a sliding scale of 5-12 per cent on property purchases over £145,000 in Scotland.

Green co-leader Ross Greer said: “It is totally unjustifiable for one of the richest men in the world to be given a free pass from paying taxes simply because of the wealthy family he was born into.

“I hope that MSPs from all parties will agree to end these outdated and unfair tax breaks.

“The monarchy is an anti-democratic hangover from an earlier era. It is long past time for the king to start paying his taxes.”
