RNLI warned not to leave workers ‘high and dry’ as it confirms closure of Isle of Wight site

THE RNLI was warned not to leave workers “high and dry” by Unite today after it confirmed it was closing its Isle of Wight manufacturing site.

The charity said that it was “committed to supporting all those impacted throughout this process” as it prepares to transfer production to Poole, Dorset, by the end of 2027.

About 70 staff worked at the site when it first outlined the plans in October.

The workforce has warned relocating to Poole — where average house prices are upwards of £500,000 and the cost of living is higher — “is not a practical option as none of the staff earn enough for this to be viable,” according to Unite.

The union’s general secretary Sharon Graham said: “It is extremely disappointing that the RNLI is determined to close this vital base.

“Our members must not be left high and dry. The RNLI must work with Unite to save these vital jobs.”
