RAIL union RMT has called for the restoration of blue light status for specialist engineers’ vehicles when responding to emergencies.

Blue light status was granted to Transport for London (TfL) Emergency Response Unit (ERU) vehicles in 2012 following the July 7 bombings.

The capability ensured rapid response to incidents across London’s transport network, and contributed to the safety of the capital’s infrastructure, RMT says.

But the policy was dropped last year following a review by TFL and British Transport Police, reportedly due to concerns about collisions.

RMT ERU representatives said they were aware of any incidents involving collisions or near misses while operating under blue light status between 2012 and 2024.

The union is backing the London Assembly transport committee’s calls for the review to be published.

RMT general secretary Eddie Dempsey said: “Our members in the Emergency Response Unit provide a vital service in keeping London’s transport network safe. 

“Stripping them of blue light capability is a backward step that risks compromising the speed and effectiveness of emergency interventions.”
