CAMPAIGNERS condemned Keir Starmer’s latest militarist move after the Prime Minister announced a new anti-Russia naval alliance with Norway.

“Every week the government ratchets up the war drive another notch. Instead of helping the push for peace in Ukraine Starmer is looking for ways to escalate tension further,” a spokeswoman for Stop the War said today.

Sir Keir and Norwegian premier Jonas Store met in Scotland to initial the pact, billed as a plan to hunt Russian submarines in the north Atlantic.

He said: “At this time of profound global instability, as more Russian ships are being detected in our waters, we must work with international partners to protect our national security. 

“This historic agreement with Norway strengthens our ability to protect our borders and the critical infrastructure our nations depend on.

“Through joint navy co-operation in the north Atlantic, we’re boosting security, supporting thousands of UK jobs, and showcasing Britain’s world-class shipbuilding on the global stage.”

Under the agreement the two countries, already both Nato members, will deploy a combined fleet of at least 13 warships to track Russian vessels alleged to be menacing vital undersea cables and pipelines.  They will share maintenance facilities, technology and equipment.

Royal marines will also undergo training in Norway “preparing them to fight in sub-zero conditions” and there would be “joint war-gaming” according to the government statement.

Earlier this year the government signed a deal to sell Norway £10 billion worth of frigates. It will now join a Norwegian-led project to build a new mine-hunting ship capable of deploying drones underwater.
