New powers to double tax on second homes welcomed
LOCAL authorities across Scotland will have the power to double council tax on second homes.
Town halls will be able to levy a 100 per cent surcharge from April on homes which are not primary residences, but are occupied for more than 25 days a year.
It is hoped that the power — long called for by the Convention of Scottish Local Authorities (Cosla) — will not only assist in bringing homes into permanent use, but raise funds for cash-strapped councils.
