Muslim Council of Britain calls for full investigation into Tory Islamophobia

THE Muslim Council of Britain is calling for a full investigation into Islamophobia in the Conservative Party.

Secretary-general Harun Khan has written to Tory chairman Brandon Lewis calling on him to take action over the “weekly occurrences of Islamophobia” among Conservative candidates and activists.

Mr Khan’s letter points out that no action has been taken against MP Bob Blackman despite his “consistent record of endorsing Islamophobia” including by retweeting former English Defence League boss Stephen Yaxley-Lennon — better known by his assumed name Tommy Robinson — whose recent imprisonment for trying to disrupt the trial of suspected child abusers has seen a major mobilisation of the far right calling for his release.

Mr Blackman denies being Islamophobic and says he shared the social media post “in error.”

It lists nine instances of Islamophobia by Tories in the past two months alone, including the case of suspended Calderdale councillor Mike Payne, who shared an article that said Muslims were “parasites” who “bred like rabbits.”

Former Tory chair Baroness Warsi agreed that the Conservatives were “in denial” about Islamophobia and urged Prime Minister Theresa May to publicly acknowledge that it is a problem.
