Roedd i’w urddo gan Orsedd y Beirdd gyda’i Gwisg Gwyrdd yn Eisteddfod Genedlaethol Caerdydd, ‘am ei gyfraniad unigryw fel hanesydd, newyddiadurwr ac fel un o’r dolenni pwysicaf yn y berthynas rhwng Cymru a Llydaw. Roedd hefyd yn adnabyddus fel awdur, golygydd, cyd-olygydd neu gyfieithydd o leiaf 25 o gyfrolau’.
Ysgrifennodd Gwyn adolygiadau radio a llyfrau i’r Morning Star a’i gyfrolau ei hun am Henry Richard (yr ‘Apostol Heddwch’ o’i fro ei hun, sef Tregaron), llên Cymru a Llydaw, hanes cyfansoddi ‘Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau’ a theithiau’r dynion ‘Sioni Winwns’ yn ne Cymru.
Roedd hefyd yn aelod brwd a gweithgar o’r Blaid Gomiwnyddol ac yn un o’r cylch i adnewyddu hen drosiad WJ Rees ym 1948 o’r Maniffesto Comiwnyddol gan Marx ac Engels o’r Almaeneg i’r Gymraeg.
