German intelligence agency lists AfD as a ‘right-wing extremist’ party

Decision allows Germany’s spooks to use informants and other tools to spy on the far-right party’s activities nationwide

THE GERMAN domestic intelligence service said today that it has classified the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, which placed second in national elections in February, as a “right-wing extremist effort” — making it subject to greater and broader surveillance of its activities.

The Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution cited the “extremist character” of the AfD and said that it “disregards human dignity” — in particular by taking aim at those who moved to Germany from mostly Muslim countries.

“As of today the agency has classified the AfD as a confirmed right-wing extremist effort due to the extremist character of the entire party that disregards human dignity,” it said.
