The Dig (12A)
Directed by Simon Stone
★★★
SET in 1939, this quintessentially English drama recounts the historic discovery of an Anglo Saxon burial ship unearthed in a quiet corner of Suffolk — Sutton Hoo.
Based on the historical novel by John Preston, whose aunt took part in the original excavation, it stars Carey Mulligan as wealthy widow and landowner Edith Pretty, who hires amateur archaeologist Basil Brown (Ralph Fiennes) to excavate a number of burial grounds on her estate.
