Election of Irranca-Davies greeted with rancour in the Senedd

RANCOUR broke out in the Senedd today as Welsh Conservatives accused the other parties of stitching up the election of Huw Irranca-Davies as the Llywydd (speaker).

Mr Irranca-Davies is the former Welsh Labour deputy first minister and stood as the Senedd Llwydd against former Tory leader Paul Davies.

But Mr Davies could not manage to get another party to second him, including from Reform UK members.

The vote for Mr Irranca-Davies crossed party lines with 85 voting in favour of the former Westminster MP who returned to Wales.

Welsh Tory leader Darren Millar drew gasps from most MSs as he used his speech to greet the newly crowned First Minister by attacking the Llywydd, saying the vote stank and was a Plaid-Labour stitch-up.

Plaid Cymru’s newly elected Senedd member for Ceredigion Penfro, Kerry Ferguson, was elected Deputy Llwydd, which means both Labour and Plaid will now both lose a vote each in Senedd proceedings.
