Cuba welcomes shipments of Mexican aid
Mexican ship ARM Huasteco, carrying aid according to the Mexican government, arrives to Havana Bay, Cuba, February 28, 2026

CUBA welcomed the arrival of two Mexican ships carrying food aid over the weekend.

The Mexican Navy ships Papaloapan and Huasteco brought over 1,000 tons of beans and powdered milk to alleviate shortages caused by an intensifying illegal US blockade.

Cuba’s Deputy Foreign Minister Josefina Vidal thanked the “brotherly people of Mexico” for the assistance. Mexico has been delivering food aid and helping to refuel aircraft that travel to Cuba, since the island has run out of jet fuel to refuel planes following US President Donald Trump’s threat of tariffs against any country supplying it with oil.

Mexico and Venezuela have stopped oil deliveries following the tariff threat; a Russian tanker, the Sea Horse, is purportedly attempting to get oil to Cuba but some reports say it has already changed course away from the island.

British readers wishing to help breach the US blockade can donate to Cuba Vive, which buys medical and food aid to ship to the island.
